Home renovation costs can be quite high, and many people are intimidated to remodel their homes because of the potential cost. We’ve found this to be particularly true in areas of the US like St. Louis, where our contractors have completed kitchen renovation projects. However, there are many ways to lower your home renovation costs without compromising the quality of your space. Here are some tricks to keep your renovation projects within your budget.

Avoid tearing down walls.

As much as you might want to tear down the wall between your kitchen and your living room, for example, keep in mind that removing walls in your home can have a huge price tag. Instead, focus on transforming each of your rooms individually to seem larger. There are many ways to do this – taking out bulky shelving or cabinetry, adding mirrors and windows, or even just re-arranging furniture.

Use recycled items for DIY projects.

Although it’s not recommended to do an entire renovation on your own, there are many small DIY projects you can do on your own to save money. Take things one step further by using recycled items for your DIY projects. For example, using recycled fixtures for the door fixtures throughout your house can save hundreds of dollars in some cases. Look to see what kind of resale stores are available in your area – you might be able to find some amazing materials for a great deal.

Pay for professional consultations instead of full services.

If you feel like you can handle most of a DIY project on your own, but still want a little professional guidance, there’s a way to get exactly what you need without overpaying. See if your local architect or interior design services will let you have a few consultations with them to develop a plan instead of overseeing the whole project. You might save as much as thousands of dollars, but you’ll still get the expertise you need to renovate your space safely and efficiently.

Don’t move plumbing or electrical fixtures unless it’s absolutely necessary.

Plumbing and electricity are usually the most challenging parts of any renovation. Moving your existing plumbing and electrical fixtures is a very time-intensive process that could end up costing thousands of dollars. Even if you want to switch out your kitchen sink for a new one, make sure you keep it in the same place if you’re trying to save money (and a headache).

Look for local deals.

The construction contractors in your area likely offer sales throughout the year, so see where you can get a good deal when planning your remodel. Many contractors offer discounts in the beginning of the year, as renovations are not as common during this time of the year. You also may notice deals on certain materials or types of projects. When you see these things, move quickly to take advantage of them.

Avoid custom materials.

Sticking to stock sizes is one of the best ways to save money, particularly when remodeling your kitchen. Custom cabinetry, sinks, and appliances can add a lot to your price tag, so stick to the standard sizes available to save money. In most cases, you’ll still be able to find an option that fits your needs.
